About the Community Centre

We know many residents in Tower Hamlets face many challenges which impact both their mental health and their physical wellbing. High rates of poverty, poor physical health, and the prevalence of social isolation especially amongst older people, prevents people from staying active, engaged in their community and able to deal with challenges. We believe everyone should be able to have access to freely available community spaces and have be able to access social and physical activities. activities. During this cost of living crisis and rising energy bills, it’s also a much needed community asset, where people can sit in comfort and warmth, enjoy a cup of tea and a chat, and join in with activities if they choose too.

The Community Centre at Toynbee Hall, which opened in 2020, provides local people with the space and support they need to lead fulfilling lives, opportunites to socialise and meet new people and maintain their independence when circumstances change. By helping local people remain active, stay healthy and tackle the challenges they face, our work adds strength and resilience to the community.

The centre in our newly build 28 Commercial Street building is a warm, welcoming, flexible and vibrant space that has been shaped by the people who use it. The Centre is an inclusive space and is welcoming of many groups in the community including older people and local families and we have a full programme of activities.
