How to reach Toynbee Hall
This guidance has been put together by members of Toynbee Hall’s Community Centre, who want everyone to be able to easily travel to Toynbee Hall.
We want this information to be useful for people who, like us, may use a wheelchair, need step-free travel options or cannot walk very far. We hope this guidance helps you reach us.
Bus
There are a number of bus stops within 0.5 miles of Toynbee Hall, including Aldgate East (0.1 miles), Lolesworth Close (0.1 miles), St Boltoph Street (0.3 miles), and Altab Ali Park (0.3 miles). If you get off at Aldgate East, please be aware that there is a wide, busy crossing.
Underground
The nearest underground stations are Aldgate East (0.1 miles), Aldgate (0.3 miles), Liverpool Street (0.4 miles) and Whitechapel (0.7 miles).
Overground
Shoreditch High Street (0.5 miles) is our nearest overground station and has a lift from the platform to ground level.
DLR
Our nearest DLRs are all fully accessible, including Tower Gateway (0.5 miles) and Shadwell (0.9 miles). All DLR stations have lift or ramp access to the platforms and relatively level access to the trains.
Step-free access
Unfortunately none of these underground stations have a lift from platform to ground level, except Liverpool Street. At Liverpool Street, a lift provides step-free access to the eastbound (Metropolitan, Circle, H&C) platform at Liverpool Street station.
There is no lift to the westbound platform. If you need help to plan an accessible travel route, you can find more information here.
Please note, it’s easy to confuse Aldgate Station and Aldgate East Station. These are two different stations. Aldgate East is much closer! Also, Toynbee Hall is on Commercial Street, not Commercial Road.
