Reshaping Temporary Accommodation with Young Disabled Londoners

Reshaping Temporary Accommodation with Young Disabled Londoners

Peer-led research for housing justice in East and North-East London

Too often young disabled people in London are  placed in poor quality, unsafe temporary accommodation (TA) with no say, no stability, and no accountability from the system. We’re working to change that.

We’re partnering with Disability Rights UK on a multi-year participatory action research (PAR) project, funded by Trust for London, to understand how temporary accommodation is affecting young disabled people. We’ll be working with young disabled people in East London to generate new knowledge and increase understanding of what can be done to improve the safety, quality, and accountability of temporary accommodation and ultimately prevent disabled people from being placed in TA in the first place.

What’s different about this research?

Peer researchers will from the very start help set the agenda, design the research, analyse the findings, and lead our campaigning efforts, speaking directly to councils, MPs, media and the wider public.

Led by Lived Experience

We’re working with paid peer researchers, young disabled people with direct experience of temporary accommodation, as equal partners throughout the project.

Rooted in Community

Our work focuses on the eight East London boroughs (Barking & Dagenham, City of London, Hackney, Havering, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, and Waltham Forest) where the need is urgent and the potential for change is high.

Action-Oriented

This research will lead to campaigning, advocacy, and policy engagement at local, regional, and national levels.

Get Involved

We’re recruiting young disabled people aged 18–25 who’ve experienced temporary accommodation in the past three years and were placed by councils in East London. No experience is needed, just your insight and voice.

You’ll receive full training, take part in regular sessions, and be paid for your time (£20/hour). This is your chance to lead on the issues that matter most to you.
