Bengali Innovators of Toynbee Hall

Bengali Innovators of Toynbee Hall

New exhibition highlights the role of the Bengali community in shaping Toynbee Hall as we know it today.

Since the 1970s the Bengali community have contributed greatly to the work of Toynbee Hall. One priority of Toynbee Hall’s current heritage project is to capture the stories of the key influencers in the Bengali community who were involved in shaping Toynbee Hall’s services from the 1970s to today through an oral history project.

Udbhābakadēra (Bengali Innovators Oral History project), ran in partnership with Central Foundation Girls School, Eastside Community Heritage and Heritage Lottery Fund, aims to showcase some of the individuals who introduced new initiatives at Toynbee Hall.

Eastside Community Heritage conducted oral history interviews with Bengali people who worked and volunteered at Toynbee Hall in the 1970s and 1980s. These stories were then brought to life in podcasts put together by pupils from Central Foundation Girls’ School, following training from Eastside. In addition, a touring exhibition has been curated by local volunteer Tanha Quadi.

The exhibition will be open at the Whitechapel Ideas Store from 2nd February to the 28th.
