Kate’s experience

Former Residential Volunteer Kate Swade, now Trustee of Toynbee Hall and Director for Shared Assets, tells us how her experience living annd volunteer here set her on her career path.

Volunteers have been at the heart of our work since our founding in 1884 and for most of our history we have hosted Residential Volunteers. As the regeneration of the Toynbee Hall Estate nears completion and we look to move back to Toynbee Hall, we are offering the Residential Voluntary Work programme that will enable creative practitioners and social researchers to develop projects, create new work and engage with the public celebrating our rich history of social reform and social action.

We offer access to our unique archive, staff expertise and a fantastic setting in our newly restored building in the heart of the city to live and create new work / projects.

The areas we are looking to recruit voluntary workers for are:

Heritage
We are looking for three residential voluntary workers from the creative industries who may be in their early stages of their creative career and have a socially engaged practice.  We are looking for an artist (any medium), storyteller and innovator who are motivated and interested in social action and reform to join the Research and Community learning team.  Your residency will sit within the Heritage team and its Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) programme.

Research
We are inviting two motivated residential voluntary workers to join us on our research and evaluation work. Over the last few years, we have worked with approximately 40 postgraduate Research and Evaluation Volunteers/Interns. You will work with colleagues to conduct primary research and evaluate service delivery at Toynbee Hall. This role will suit you if you want to develop your social research and evaluation skills.

In 1975,when I was 17, I spent the summer living and volunteering at Toynbee Hall. It was a great learning experience and a memory I will cherish forever. Thankful you still provide this opportunity.
